What Is an Adaptogenic Face Cleanser, and Do You Need One?

A plain-language guide to adaptogens in skincare, what an adaptogenic face cleanser or face wash does, and who it suits.

Adaptogens are plants and mushrooms that, in traditional systems such as Ayurveda, are taken to help the body cope with physical and mental stress. Ashwagandha and ginseng are two of the best known.

An adaptogenic face cleanser (often called an adaptogenic face wash) includes extracts of these plants. It still does a cleanser's main job, which is removing oil, dirt, sweat and sunscreen, but it is formulated so that skin feels calm and comfortable afterwards instead of tight or stripped.

Why adaptogens show up in skincare

Many adaptogenic plants are rich in antioxidants and soothing compounds. Ashwagandha contains antioxidant withanolides, ginseng is used to help tired skin look fresher, and they pair well with soothing botanicals such as gotu kola (cica) and aloe vera.

Skincare cannot change your stress levels, and nobody should promise that. What a well-made adaptogenic cleanser can do is clean effectively while being kind to skin that is already dealing with pollution, heat, humidity and long days.

Who it suits

An adaptogenic jelly or gel cleanser suits most skin types, including oily and combination skin that needs a thorough cleanse, and normal or sensitive skin that dislikes harsh foaming soaps. If your face feels tight and squeaky after washing, a sulphate-free adaptogenic cleanser is worth trying.

If you have a skin condition such as active acne, eczema or rosacea, see a dermatologist. A cleanser is a cosmetic, not a treatment.

How to choose one

Look for a sulphate-free (no SLS or SLES), soap-free formula, a short and readable ingredient list with the adaptogens named, and a pH-friendly gel texture. Check the label for the manufacturing licence number, net quantity and best-before date, which Indian law requires.

Deloura's Adaptogenic Mochi Face Cleanser combines ashwagandha, ginseng, cica and aloe with natural AHA, BHA and niacinamide in a bouncy, sulphate-free jelly made in India.

Try the Adaptogenic Mochi Face Cleanser

India's first mochi-texture face cleanser: a bouncy, cushiony jelly with ashwagandha, ginseng and cica, plus natural AHA, BHA and niacinamide. It cleanses without stripping, so skin stays hydrated and comfortable, even in winter, and many skin types can skip moisturiser straight after washing.
