Ashwagandha for Skin: What It Does in Skincare
Ashwagandha is famous as a supplement. Here is how it is used in skincare and what to realistically expect from it.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of Ayurveda's most important herbs and is widely taken as a supplement for stress. In skincare it is used as a botanical extract for its antioxidant compounds, called withanolides.
What ashwagandha brings to a cleanser
Antioxidants help skin deal with everyday environmental stress such as pollution and UV exposure. In a face wash, ashwagandha extract works alongside gentle cleansing agents so skin feels refreshed rather than dry.
Because a cleanser is rinsed off within a minute, think of ashwagandha here as part of a gentle, balanced formula, not a miracle ingredient.
Is it safe for all skin types?
Ashwagandha extract is generally well tolerated in cosmetics. As with any new product, patch test on your inner arm for 24 hours first, especially if you have sensitive skin or plant allergies.
Try the Adaptogenic Mochi Face Cleanser
India's first mochi-texture face cleanser: a bouncy, cushiony jelly with ashwagandha, ginseng and cica, plus natural AHA, BHA and niacinamide. It cleanses without stripping, so skin stays hydrated and comfortable, even in winter, and many skin types can skip moisturiser straight after washing.
